Few grounds stir the soul like Leichhardt Oval.

Wrapped in history and tucked beside Iron Cove in Sydney’s inner-west, Leichhardt Oval is where generations of fans have packed the hill, the noise of the crowd rolls across the water, and the game feels close enough to touch.

Known to locals as The Eighth Wonder of the World, this is more than a stadium — it’s a ritual, a roar, and a home for true believers.

And now it has its own beer! Sydney Brewery has produced an easy-drinking lager that is perfect for an afternoon or evening at the footy or an in-stadium concert, in partnership with Inner West Council and VenuesLive, the food and beverage operator of Leichhardt Oval.

Leichhardt Lager will be launched at the Wests Tigers’ opening game of the 2026 NRL season against North Queensland Cowboys at Leichhardt Oval this Saturday 14 March (kick-off 3pm).

VenuesLive CEO Daryl Kerry said Leichhardt Lager had been developed by Sydney Brewery with the support of Inner West Council and the mighty Wests Tigers.

“Historic Leichhardt Oval is more than just a footy ground . . . it is a cherished community asset where locals fill every vantage point to watch the action. It is a place filled with history and memories and we all feel The Eighth Wonder of the World deserves its own beer,” Mr Kerry said.

Sydney Brewery Sales Manager, Chris Ryan, said: “Leichhardt Lager celebrates the iconic heritage of Leichhardt Oval and its passionate fan base. We believe that one of the great simple pleasures of life as a Sydney sports fan is watching a game and enjoying a beer on the famous hill at Leichhardt on a sunny afternoon. Now we have an easy-drinking lager dedicated to this legendary venue . . . good beer, good friends, good times.”

The Mayor of Inner West Council, Darcy Byrne, said: “After a decade long fight, we’ve saved The Eighth Wonder of the World for generations to come.

“Now we can celebrate on the famous Wayne Pearce Hill with a Leichhardt Lager as the Tigers take on the Cowboys this Saturday.”

All beer sales at Leichhardt Oval operate under Responsible Service of Alcohol Regulations and Stadium Licensing Conditions.

An exciting new retail food outlet is set to be enjoyed by fans attending The Ashes Test in Perth, with the opening of Proper Burgers by world-renowned chef and restauranteur Matt Moran at Optus Stadium.

Matt joined Optus Stadium as a culinary ambassador in August 2022, bringing his expertise and inspirations to the Stadium’s culinary offerings in premium event spaces and through one-off retail food specials at major events.

His new outlet is an Australia-first and will be open on all major event days, from sporting spectacles to sold-out concerts. Optus Stadium is operated and catered for by VenuesLive, on behalf of Venues West and the West Australian Government.

“I have been cooking my whole life, and one thing I have learnt is: simple, done properly is hard to beat,” Matt said at Optus Stadium.

“That’s what Proper Burgers is all about, keeping it simple with good produce done really well.

“For me, that means starting with grass-fed beef, seasoned properly and cooked with care. It means soft milk buns, sharp cheese and sauces we make ourselves.

“It’s the kind of burger you remember – simple, satisfying, and bloody delicious. Big flavour. Nothing fancy, just damn good burgers.”

The opening of Proper Burgers at Aisle 128 inside Optus Stadium is the next stage of the Stadium’s culinary evolution, following the introduction of Biggie Smalls, a kebab shop with a twist, from fellow ambassador Shane Delia.

The introduction of Biggie Smalls in July 2024 has proven so popular with fans that a second outlet has since opened on Level 5.

Optus Stadium CEO Mike McKenna said the VenuesLive team liked to have fun and do things differently with its retail food offerings.

“It’s really exciting that we will be able to offer all fans the opportunity to sample Matt’s food across the Stadium,” Mr McKenna said.

“Proper Burger is another addition to our huge range of items offered in the Stadium. We will continue to offer our fan-favourite Stadium cheeseburger, and other popular burgers, but think the time is right to provide this elevated burger and snack offering.

“If you’re not seated nearby, take the time to go and visit the outlet and explore all the other fan favourites at different locations.”

Matt said launching Proper Burgers in collaboration with VenuesLive was a natural extension of what they had already built together.

“Over the years it’s been fantastic working alongside Executive Chef Alasdair Thompson to showcase Western Australian producers and to continue bringing my paddock-to-plate philosophy to life on such a grand stage.”

Matt said he was particularly stoked that Proper Burgers would launch at The Ashes Test in Perth.

“Being at the cricket is about soaking up the Aussie summer, the buzz of the crowd, and each other’s company. The food is a part of that too, celebrating the season and keeping it simple but special.”

Layla, the celebrated Brisbane restaurant from chef Shane Delia in partnership with VenuesLive, has been awarded Best New Restaurant Opening of 2025 in Queensland in the Sitchu Awards 2025, as voted by diners across Australia.

Since opening within the Thomas Dixon Centre in early 2025, Layla has quickly established itself as one of Brisbane’s most captivating dining experiences – a celebration of food and culture inspired by ancient spice trails with an Australian accent. Set within the heritage-listed arts precinct, the restaurant blends refined warmth and contemporary design with a menu that brings together flavour, culture and connection.

“To be recognised by the people who dine with us and share in what we do is incredibly humbling,” says Shane Delia. “Layla was created to bring together spice, culture and connection and this award reflects not only the hard work of our team but the amazing Brisbane community who’ve embraced us from day one.”

“It exemplifies how public and private investment can deliver outstanding outcomes for audiences, community, and Queensland’s vibrancy.

“Layla, with Shane Delia’s inspired menu and the team’s warm hospitality, has become a standout foodie experience. I acknowledge the support of the Queensland Government and our capital enablers, who believed in our vision to include destination hospitality in the redevelopment.

“Congratulations to Shane, and the Layla, VenuesLive, and Queensland Ballet teams on this well-deserved recognition.”

The accolade marks a significant milestone in Layla’s first year of operation, reaffirming its place among Queensland’s leading restaurants and one of Australia’s most exciting new openings.

Leading Australian decorative surfaces brand polytec has been announced as the official naming rights partner for the Central Coast’s premier events stadium. Already a major sponsor of local A-League team the Central Coast Mariners, polytec continues to deepen its commitment to the region and its people.

Under a new agreement, the Gosford-based venue will now be known as polytec Stadium – the Central Coast’s Home of Sport, Entertainment and Community Events for a period of up to 15 years.

The first major event to be held at polytec Stadium will be the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ NRL home game against the Cronulla Sharks on Saturday 26 July.

polytec is owned by the Borg Group, a key employer in the Central Coast region. The Borg Group is a leading privately-owned, vertically integrated Australian business, with a portfolio spanning forestry, manufacturing, construction and property development. Founded in 1989 by local brothers Michael and John Borg, the group is based at Somersby, New South Wales, and employs over 2,900 people across Australia.

Being part of the stadium through one of our leading brands is a great way to give back to the community where many of our people live and work,” said Borg Group Managing Director, John Borg. “As a major regional employer, we’re proud to support such an iconic local venue. We look forward to a long and collaborative partnership with Central Coast Council to bring top-quality sport and entertainment to the region.”

Set on the banks of the stunning Brisbane Water in Gosford, the stadium has earned a reputation as one of the most picturesque sporting venues in the world.

Owned by Central Coast Council on behalf of the community and operated by leading venue management company VenuesLive, the stadium has become a central part of the region’s identity—both locally and internationally.

Venue Manager Kath Casey said the rebranding to polytec Stadium reflects a new era of growth and investment in the Central Coast.

“polytec Stadium is truly the people’s stadium,” Ms Casey said. “This naming rights partnership with the Borg Group is about investing in the future of our region. As a proud local success story, Borg’s support will help us attract major events, boost tourism and local business, and continue delivering first-class experiences for fans.”

The transition to the new name will begin immediately, marking the start of an exciting chapter for the venue and the community.

Central Coast Council CEO David Farmer said the 15-year commitment from polytec is a great outcome for the community.

“We’re tremendously proud of our Central Coast stadium and the quality events and programs it continues to deliver each year,” he said.

“This partnership, with a reputable local business, is a great result which will only continue to bring the community together while boosting business and visitation in our region.”

polytec Stadium is gearing up for a huge year, with more than 40 events scheduled across sport, entertainment and community celebrations set to attract over 200,000 fans through the gates and generate significant economic benefits for the Central Coast region.

Home to the 2023/24 A-League triple-crown champions, Central Coast Mariners men, and this year’s Ninja A-League Grand Final winners, Central Coast Mariners women, polytec Stadium continues to be the beating heart of sport on the Coast.

The venue will also host NRL regular-season matches featuring the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs, as well as the Sydney Roosters in the NRLW.

The stadium was the proud host of last season’s historic A-League Men’s Grand Final and has welcomed major national and international fixtures, including Matildas internationals and the England Lionesses during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Beyond elite sport, polytec Stadium remains a vital community hub, hosting a wide range of charity, cultural, and entertainment events throughout the year.
